A friend of mine who did semiconductor research in the mid 1960s said purple plague was still a concern at that time. He felt it might account for deteriorating performance in an early NMR instrument we were trying to keep going in the late 1980s. If true, any germanium transistor produced in the Ge hayday might have purple plague deterioration. A number of unmarked, but likely germanium transistors I ohmed a few days ago were open.
