As close as you can without it sticking to the poles. And that depends on how strong the magnet is. I have taken many headphones apart and remagnetized or replaced the magnet, as strong as I can. That helps more than lowering the diaphram. After that, lower the diaphram as low as you dare. It's a game of chicken. Good luck, John
