Scot,

As everyone knows, I'm no xpurt; however, last year I read some Usenet articles on the subject. One man got good results by setting up a jig to allow him to selectively sand the diaphrams thinner on the edges while leaving them thicker in the center, while at the same time giving a slight "dome" shape. How close to set them to the magnet is determined by the expected volume, too close results in the diaphram hitting and buzzing at high volume.

I have wondered about making diaphrams out of some very sensitive plastic, with a little piece of "supermagnet" at the center to give something for the phone magnet to pull on. Sort of a variation of the balanced armature type.

Are replacement diaphrams available anywhere? Maybe some are better than others. For the military types, I'd bet there are great cases of them sitting in some warehouse getting old and dirty.
