Hi Scot, I think the simple answer is as close as possible without touching. The diaphragm is drawn in toward the magnet so it is just about impossible to measure the actual air gap once you put the diaphragm on. By using a ruler across the top of the earpiece with the diaphragm OFF, the gap would be about 0.006 inches with a lot of variablility for the diameter of the diaphragm and its thickness/deformability. If it is touching the magnet poles, the sound will dampen out. If too far away if loses effieciency. You can shim it up of it is touching by making little paper O rings. Or you can shim up the magnet cores with index card shims put in place behind the magnet cores to raise them up a little. Sometimes just flipping the diaphragm over will help since they develop a concave deformity over 50 years or so of being pulled on in the same direction. Scott
