If you make the diaphram weak (because you want it easy for the coil to move it) you then must make the permanent magnet weak, and keep it farther from the poles. I have noticed that strong permanent magnets help earphone sensitivity a bunch. But strong magnets pull harder on the diaphram. You also want the diaphram super close to the magnet poles. All this sort of encourages you toward a strong diaphram rather than a weaker one. For the diaphram to vibrate for good treble response, it needs to be low mass (light weight) too. (and magnetic of course). Those are my thoughts. _J_
