The Mylar film with heat sensitive glue is easily available. Any hobby shop catering to model airplane people has it. A modeler would give you some if you asked, it is cheap. It pulls "tight as a drum" and wrinkle free when heated if you take any care at all in installing it. The Saran wrap would not get nearly so tight, it is to stretchy. Look for steel shim stock at a machine tool supply outfit. Oh! tear apart a feeler gauge set!! : ) I really like the adjustable gap idea. Even better than the direct screw thread pushing the magnents, might be using a wedge too. Use the screw to push a small wedge, under the magnent assembly and use tiny expansion springs to hold the magnents against the wedge. Depending on the incline of the wedge, the adjustment of the magnent height could be ultra precise. I'll get on this and report back.
