Thru-hole components are the plain old electronic device we are familiar with that have wire leads. In the good old days, of the '60's and '70's, these were installed through the holes drilled in printed circuit board. The great preponderance of components being produced today are SMD's (surface mount devices) that are soldered to the surface of the PCB.
