I have observed this too. Works best on strong stations. I just happened to have the superhet sitting on the table about a foot away from the detector coil, and when I took off the headphones I got FEEDBACK!! I mooved the phones away from the radio and it stopped. I tapped the phones and it came through the radio clearly. I spoke into the phones and heard myself mixed in with the audio comming in from the AM station. When there was a pause in the modulation, I could hear myself very clearly.
What is happening is the headphones are modulating the signal on the tank through the diode. I am pretty sure it will not work with the detection diode shorted but I didn't try it. Guess I should. It is cool. --Loose
