Larry,"avalanche detector" changes things alot.As you probably know,reverse biased emitter-base junctions,as well as regular zener diodes are used as noise generators.Spark gaps also are noise generators.Did you actually have a micro power spark transmitter?I've wondered about this since reading about your 'super detector". eb.
