I once built a liite AM xmtr from a tip in a magazine. It used an multi impeadance audio output xfmr driven by a 3 watt audio amp and a tape player etc. One of the windings (I forget which) was driven by my RF generator set to a quiet spot on the AM band. It worked quite well for a couple of blocks or more depeding on the antenna I used. Larry's comments about the xtal xmtr remined me of it. It was one of those projects that worked great spread all over the bench; not so well when I put it in a box!
