Harvey, they indeed do work but not, by my experience, for xtal sets. I think they are designed to enhance amplified signals for such as portable radios (house current or batt. operated). I have had excellent results with one I made from instructions I received here on Rap n' Tap a while back. Wish I could direct you to the article but afraid I can't. Maybe somebody else (the author?) can. Not remarkable results here in the city but dramatic results far in the country.

While, yes, they are a loop antenna (employing a variable capacitor for fine tuning) which resembles those found on such xtal sets as Oatmeal Box sets and Cigar Box sets, they can't amplify or otherwise enchance a (passive)signal such as you get from your antenna enough to make a difference you'd appreciate. They are made, I am fairly sure, as aids to AM reception with convential, powered radios.

Maybe someone listening can direct you to a description of how to make one if you want to. For example, to the msg here on Rap n' Tap where I got my info. (I had it all worked out for you when my connection was interrupted and I lost it all before I could finish.)

regards, Mike h
