Yes I remember the same article - I was about the same age too. This device would have used the thermoelectric effect. You can duplicate it by getting a bunch of pieces of copper and steel wires, and twisting them together at the ends to make a daisy chain. Then you bend them into a circle so that every other joint is at the center. You apply heat to the center, and it generates voltage. You can improve much on this simple device by getting a hold of some surplus Peltier devices. THese are what go into these electric coolers - well, they also make pretty effective thermoelectric junctions too.
