Well, yeah, sort of... any amplier will not only amplify but do some detection too. There are lots of PN junctions (diodes) in that IC, and if there is no detection in the first stage there will surely be some in the 2nd. Most likely a little bit in every stage. So even a little detection in the first stage goes a long way. Designers of audio amplifiers (at least the good ones) have to make shileding, filtering and bypassing a top priority if they don't want their amps to play the local radio station through the speakers. That includes the power leads too. Then it is necessary to shield, ground, and filter everything going into the amp to try to keep the RF out.

So, --yes, that RS amp is the better part of a (crummy) radio. At my house I can tune all the locals using just a 6" dia coil, cap, diode and RS amp. No antenna or ground needed. --Larry
