Larry, Bounding a laser off a window is actually extremely effective and widely used and has a codename. There are avoidance specifications on it.
Microwave illumination is more questionable in my mind, the wavelength is long compared to expected diaphram displacement.
And Richard, as I understood that scheme, it was simply an acoustically modulated (volume modulated) cavity coupled to a whip antenna. I guessed the antenna was illuminated and its reflection was slightly AM or FM modulated? That does not seem like a very success oriented scheme to me. I always wanted to try it. _J_
