Jeff, (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong) the individual strands of stranded hookup wire are not insulated from one another, as is the case with Litz wire. Thus I see neither advantage nor disadvantage over a solid conductor, save the issue of its flexibility. I have always found that solid wire is easier to work with when widing small coils, holding its shape well. Having said that, coils made from solid wire that isn't straight look pretty ragged. So I take a length of wire, tie one end of it to something solid, and give it a good jerk to straighten it out.
