Thank you for your comments Richard. You seem to have some experience with Litz wire. I have never seen the stuff. With regard to proximity effect, do you happen to know if the insulation between the individual strands spaces them far enough apart to reduce this to an acceptable minimum? This is one thing I don't understand about Litz. Seems to me that all those little wires are just too close together--like a close-wound coil.

Perhaps my understanding of the basic principles envolved is not correct.

I envision a large completely smooth conductor (like #14 solid) as having the geometry to let the electrons spread out over a wide area where each has an opportunity to get equally far away from every one of the others. The eddy current aspect is not clear to me. Perhaps such a conductor would encourage eddy's down into the wire and back to the surface, whereas the tiny conductors would minimize this due to their small diameter.
