Good. Real solid phosphor bronze wound strings are pricy but don't get get rusty on the cat wisker point. Buy your son some decent guitar strings! (They really do sound better too.)
Also stainless wire from needle threaders works, but maybe "seems like" not quite as easy to find hot spots on the best galena?? (my very subjective impression). I have come to sort of favor phosphor bronze over all else for a number of reasons.
I usually control the stiffness by controlling the length of the wire.
