John, I don't think SS works as well either. I tried samples from ALL my son's Fender strings and they just didn't measure up. As for the phosphor bronze from the outer winding of acoustic (Rules!) strings, I 'spect they are actually phosphor bronze (though plain brass windings are common. The brass ones are softer and look yellower). I have used them for 2 years now and they perform good. The only thing that comes close (for me) is a really fine hi-carbon sewing needle. The biggest difference is ease of "tickling" you get with the nice, springy length of pb winding you describe. So my vote is for pb. winding wire. PS: I cut mine at a radical angle with side-cutting pliers and bring them to a near-needle point on a fine file or Arkansas stone. Oh, I dunno if it's necessary, but it maybe helps.
