What about rocks? In the old days (today and 1920) they used rocks of crystal (hence the name "crystal radio". Some rocks (Galena, aka lead sulfide) can be more sensitive than commercial diodes. Iron Pyrite, aka fools gold, is available in "science" stores and works pretty well if you have strong signals in your area. Even a razor blade and pencil lead will work if you have real strong signals.
