I was indeed, oversimplifying the action from the Fe point..However Lighning rods are pointed for this reason, and Van De Graff Generators have large, featureless, globes on top for the same reason..HF Mobile antennas need smooth tops even at 100W.. I could never get an coated blade to work. The best I remember were the Old blue-blades, which I assumed were un-coated..The newer (in the 1950's) Brown-colored blades (Gillette) refused to work..As others have mentioned, the edge seems to be the hot spot.. This edge is un-coated on all the(old)blades.. The old 1N34s (the big glass jobs) were (as I remember) more sensitive than the newer (modern) ones...Also, My first set, a Philmore slider-tuned set was LOUDER than any I remember today.. Maybe my ears were much better (Certainly true) Jim K1EXE
