Steven, I've had better luck running a 1T4 than a 1S5 in 'ginny detectors. As long as you're not trying to drive a loudspeaker with the output stage, I haven't found much gain increase by going from 45 up to 90 Volts. I'm using 2K 'phones or a 10k input transformer with the speaker, so this may be the reason.

Yes... just a little. Conduction begins right around 1.2 volts. Considering the discharge characteristics of an alkaline ( generally like a kiddie slide), the NiCad under light load is better. AA size should do. Object is to pass small current, so as not to swamp your received signal, while getting a sharp increase in current when the signal goes through.
