Thanks I'll pick up the other tube. I haven't tried changing the detector to regen yet. However, when I added the cap for filtering RF out of audio stage the 2-tuber became a real ear slammer. Also, the cap got rid the local FM station. I just hung a transformer and speaker on the output. Had to reconnect the ground (not needed for phones). Now it has a very nice listening level for background music.
This is what I get for going to my wife's family reunions. Had the parts for almost a year, but didn't assemble the project. Cousin Bill's talk kept alternating between collecting tubers and the church youth group he leads. Just kept me thinking about that scout project I never tried. Day after we got home and unpacked I ran up to Radio Shack for 5 9-volt batteries to provide the 45-volt B+. Here I am listening to pleasant music on a 50 yr. old design.

Yup thats the way its supposed to be. Remember that the signal in and out is ALWAYS the outer pins for this rating... its a matter of if you ground the center-tap or not. As larry states.... try experimenting with the ground connections on BOTH sides.
