Thanks for the information. Holders for 4 D cells cost little. Likewise 6-volt transformers. I've seen 6AU6's in quite a variety of applications. Might try a 6-volt fil regen. I'm mostly reading the new Rap-n-Tap now.

In Nazi occupied Europe posession of a radio was a death penalty offence. (However not all German soldiers believed in enforcing that law.) Crystal radios were built into cribbage boards (pancake coils, fixed detectors and tuning and earphones and antennas attached with metal cribbage pegs), and were smuggled into the POW camps in non-Red Cross packages from home.

Convoy ships liked crystal sets because U-boats could not home in on the local oscolator or IF signal.
