When I checked the frequency range of the stock RS xtal set, it went from about 450 to 2250 kHz or so. Putting the wierd coil in parallel with part of the RS coil lowered the effective inductance of the set, making the capacitor do more of the tuning load, and also spreading the dial out a bit electronically. Probably didn't really improve your selectivity much, if any, except that you could tune more slowly.
