Steven, I've always found ground communications fascinating, though I've never tried it myself. I first saw an article reprinted in "Radio for the Millions" from 'Popular Science' magazine in the 1940s. If you don't have the book, drop me an e-mail and I can copy the article for you. Ground communications at audio frequencies was the lifetime preoccupation of Nathan Stubblefield, sometime around the turn of the century. There's info on him to be found on the web, simply search his name on Yahoo, et.al. Stubblefield was going to provide wireless telephones for the masses, though I'm not sure how he was going to keep it all from being one, big, local-party-line.
