In a copy of a June-89 article of (can't find the name on the pages) magazine called "Build A Matchbox Crystal Radio" by Steve Payor he mentions the following:

A 1000-Ohm/8-Ohm transformer will display 2000 Ohms on the outer primary wires. He puts a 2.2K resistor and .22-.47 cap (looks like a little tin can) in parallel on one of the input leads. The earpieces of the headphones go in series.

There's a LOT in here about headphone impedance and circuit Q and other interesting stuff. Besides that it's a cute radio. :)
