I remember (somewhere from 1957 to 1962) an article in Pop Electronics about using audio amps for communicating through the ground (it may even have been a Carl & Jerry episode).
For a Jr High science fair, I tried it with a couple of Lafayette Electronics transistor amplifiers. The transmitter amp had each of the two output leads connected a separate nail (grounding rod) and the receiver amps two input leads were connected in a similar manner. These "grounding rods" were placed in a flower pot with moist soil and the darn thing worked.
As I recall, the article suggested using as powerful of an amplifier as possible.
Good Luck!

Try again. Everything checked out fine when I uploaded it and it's still ok. Exec-PC likes to do mantainence at random times betwen Midnight and 6AM CST and parts of the system go on and offline.
As for a bigger format....the pages are almost one screen wide and two screens high each.
