As Larry said, this set ought to work for you. One way to check the earphones is to put them on and touch the terminals together on your tongue - you should hear a faint click (works with my XSS phones) - touch the terminals to a small battery and you should hear a LOUD click. Diodes are usually pretty foolproof, but you can get a pack of 10 1N34As from Radio Shack for about $1.20 in case you can't test the one you have, and try a different one. Finally, sometimes the plates of a variable capacitor will be shorted - easy to test with an ohmmeter; otherwise, just disconnect it from the circuit - with an antenna and ground you should hear something.
