I am looking for ordinary two inch speakers. 8 ohm and .2 watt. The speaker that I have is an Archer 40-246 purchased from Radio Shack. They don't carry them anymore. Please help!

Okay, time to get serious. Sounds like diode/phones working, and since you say capacitor isn't shorting, then here is what I recommend. First, disconnect the diode from the top of the coil/capacitor junction and connect it to the 7th or 8th turn from the ground side of the coil; this gives you a better impedance match for the detector circuit. You might also put a 0.001 uF fixed capacitor in parallel with the headphone connections; this should boost the signal to the phones. When I hear "everything at once", and the capacitor doesn't seem to affect anything, then it's usually because I forgot to hook up the ground connection. Try a ground, even if it is an electrical switchplate cover screw. Finally, if it is still not working, it is time to go for an antenna - don't connect it in the "recommended" spot (unless it works). Try tapping it down on the coil some. In your location, even a short external antenna of a few meters (with a ground), should pull something out. Note, the first mod, tapping the detector, may be all you need to do. I don't have strong enough locals to use a cigar box loop, so if you still don't get it working, maybe Larry will chip in, since he too is a "city boy" in San Jose.
