I am going to make a "long wire" of random length but with a new twist. (At least for me.)

I'm going to take a good size length of 300 ohm twin lead ribbon, a least 50 feet, and terminate it AT EACH END with a 300 ohm resistor. There will be no standing waves on this line because it will appear to be infinite in BOTH directions. It will need no tuning at ANY frequency.

I will connect to only ONE end of one side so as not to upset the infinite line characteristics. I'll connect to my antenna teminal on my radio. If I'm right this should work very well.

I'll let you all know how it works out.
