I can't figure out how these LED flicker flame lights work!

You have probably seen them in restaurants and stores:

I had one that quit working (battery probably) so I took it apart (like I do everything). All it has in it is a couple of button batteries and two fairly heavy wires touching that have some sort of crystal-looking crust on them.

Wow! What? I am having a hard time believing my eyes. Help me out here guys, how's that work?

We need a photo!

But you describe something entirely different, some kind of crude electrochemical reaction?
